Postnormal science

A problem-solving strategy for policy-relevant research in conditions of uncertainty, disputed values, high stakes, and urgent action.

Developed in the 1990s by philosophers Silvio Funtowicz and Jerome Ravetz.

Complementing “normal science”; temporary suspension or deferral of the scientific ideal of truth-seeking, in favour of quality assurance through sustained engagement with internal partners, stakeholders, and “extended peer communities”.
